Psychiatry, OB/GYN & Primary Care Have Higher Clinical Attrition Rates Than Other Medical Specialties
Clinical attrition rates between 2013 and 2019 among psychiatrists, obstetricians/gynecologists (OB/GYN), and primary care physicians were higher than average, according to a recent study. Across all physician specialties, attrition rates were higher among those who cared for older and sicker individuals. During the study's timeframe, the percentage of physicians leaving clinical practice increased from 3.5% in 2013 to 4.9% in 2019.
Findings include:
Among psychiatrists, the hazard ratio of clinical attrition was 1.53 compared to hospital-based physicians
Among OB/GYNs, it was 1.62
Among primary care physicians, it was 1.09
