Psychotherapy Use Among Adults Up 31% Since 2018, But Varies By Demographics
Between 2018 and 2021, the percentage of adults in the United States who received psychotherapy increased by 30.7%, from 6.5% to 8.5%, but the degree of increase varied across demographic groups. The greatest increase, 2.7 percentage points (31%), was among those with mild-to-moderate distress. The percentage of adults with this level of distress who received psychotherapy increased from 8.6% in 2018 to 11.2% in 2021. Among people with serious psychological distress, receipt of psychotherapy increased by 2.1 percentage points, from 20.9% in 2018 to 31.2% in 2021.
