Rates Of Seclusion & Restraint Fell Substantially From 2013 To 2017 Across All Hospital Types
Across all hospital types, the rates of seclusion and restraint dropped between 2013 and 2017. About 67% of hospitals reported imposing seclusion for less than 0.9 hours per 1,000 “patient hours,” and imposing restraint for less than 0.15 hours per 1,000 patient hours. However, about 10% of hospitals reported rates of seclusion and restraint at least five to 10 times higher. Among both acute care and psychiatric hospitals, for-profit facilities reported rates much lower than those for government-run and non-profit facilities.
