Receiver To Take Over California Prisons’ Mental Health Program To Develop Suicide Prevention Action Plan

On April 1, 2025, a federal court issued an order informing the State of California that it intended to appoint a receiver to oversee the state’s Correctional Health Care Services, which provides medical, dental, and mental health services to inmates of the state’s 31 California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) institutions. The receiver, Colette S. Peters, who served as director for the federal Bureau of Prisons from August 2022 through January 2025, is responsible for developing a plan to implement suicide prevention measures as outlined in an earlier court order.
