San Francisco Updates Homeless Shelter Policies To Allow Families Longer Stays
The City and County of San Francisco updated its length-of-stay policies for homeless shelters to allow families longer stays while seeking more permanent housing, according to local news reports. The new policies go into effect on October 1, 2025.;
Currently, families in the temporary shelter system who have stayed for 90 days must apply for discretionary extensions every 30 days.
Under the new policy, families that continue to meet eligibility requirements can apply for an unlimited number of 90-day extensions.
