Share Of Buprenorphine Prescriptions For OUD Initiated In California Emergency Departments Rose From 0.1% In 2017 To 5% In 2022

The percentage of buprenorphine prescriptions issued to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) during an emergency department visit in California increased from 0.1% of all first buprenorphine prescriptions from any prescriber in 2017 to 5% in 2022.In 2017, 42,163 California residents with OUD received a new first buprenorphine prescription from any prescriber, and 46 (0.1%) received the first prescription from an emergency department clinical professional. In 2022, 62,339 people received a new first prescription for buprenorphine, and 3,289 (5%) received the first prescription from an emergency department clinical professional.
