Students With Disabilities In General Education Classrooms Increased 25% Between 2012 & 2024

More students ages 6 to 21 with disabilities spent at least 40% of the school day in general education (gen-ed) classrooms during the 2023-2024 school year than during the 2012-2013 school year, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The number of students with disabilities in a gen-ed classroom for at least 40% of the day increased from 4.6 million in 2012-2013 to 5.7 million in 2023-2024, an increase of approximately 25%.
