Suicide Rate For People With Schizophrenia Disorder Is 1.7% During 10 Years Post-Diagnosis

About 1.7% of people first diagnosed with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) died by suicide. During the 10 years post-diagnosis, the likelihood of death by suicide was highest among those who had a psychiatric hospitalization, a co-occurring mood disorder, or a suicide attempt before being diagnosed with schizophrenia. The risk of suicide was also higher among those who were diagnosed at later ages compared to those diagnosed by age 25.
