Systemic Inequity In Mental Health Services Between 2016 & 2020 Resulted In Excess Premature Deaths Among Minorities

Systemic inequity in mental health service access and delivery contributed to higher-than-expected death rates among minorities between 2016 and 2020. During these years, there were 116,722 excess premature mental and behavioral health-related deaths among indigenous populations and racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States. The excess cost of these premature deaths cost the United States $278 billion in years of life lost. If the systemic inequity were eliminated and adequate behavioral health access and treatment were available for all minority groups, the United States health system could save $60 to $90 billion annually.
