Child & Teen Obesity Increases 1,027% In 40 Years
Ten times more children and teens are obese today than 40 years ago, marking a 1,027% increase in the children and teens classified as obese. In 1975, about 11 million children and teens were classified as obese. In 2016, that number had increased to about 124 million. Moreover, about 213 million children were overweight in 2016. Obesity is generally classified as a body-mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, while overweight is classified as a BMI of 25-29.9, however cut-offs are lower among children and adolescents and vary based on age.
