Texas Hospitals Report More Than 100,000 Hospital & Emergency Department Visits By Individuals Not ‘Lawfully Present’ In The United States During State Fiscal Year 2025
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) reported that during state fiscal year 2025, from November 2024 through February 2025, individuals not "lawfully present" in the United States made more than 100,000 hospital and emergency department visits. The cost of these visits totaled more than $447 million, according to the report.
Texas hospitals have been collecting immigration status data since November 1, 2024, to comply with an executive order (GA-46) issued by Governor Greg Abbott on August 8, 2024. The order required hospitals to ask individuals seeking care if they were “lawfully present” in the United States . . .
