Texas Juvenile Justice Reforms Linked to 65% Drop In Youth At State-Secure Facilities

Between 2007 and 2012, the average daily population of youth committed to Texas secure juvenile justice facilities dropped by 65%, from 4,305 in 2007 to 1,481 in 2012. During the same period, parole revocations to Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) secure facilities dropped by 63.8%; commitments dropped by 64.2%, and total admissions dropped by 64.1%. During the same time period, juvenile arrests also declined by 33%.
