U.S.-Born U.S. Medical Graduates Are A Minority In 9 Of 11 Internal Medicine Subspecialties

Physicians born in the United States who graduated from U.S. medical schools represented a minority of physicians in nine of 11 internal medicine subspecialties in 2026. They represented a majority only in gastroenterology, at 53.8%, and hospice and palliative medicine, at 56.0%.

Across the overall internal medicine workforce analyzed, 47.2% of physicians were born outside the United States. About 36.1% were international medical graduates (IMGs) born outside the U.S., and another 11.1% were U.S. medical graduates (USMGs) born outside the country.
