United States Needs 10,000 More Geriatricians By 2050
By 2050, the United States will need 10,000 more (nearly 200% more) geriatricians to care for just 10% of people aged 65 and older with dementia. In 2021, there were 5,170 geriatricians practicing in the U.S. By 2050, to serve just 10% of those with Alzheimer's dementia, 15,417 total geriatricians will be needed. To serve the 30% of seniors who will need broader geriatric care, 46,252 geriatricians (nine times the current number of geriatricians) will be needed. By 2050, an estimated 12.7 million Americans will have Alzheimer's dementia.
