Vancouver, Canada Votes To Pause Construction Of New Supportive Housing In Downtown Eastside
On February 26, 2025, the City Council in Vancouver, Canada, approved a motion to pause the construction of new supportive housing in the city’s Downtown Eastside. By pausing construction, the mayor and the council believe the city will be able to “focus on renewing and revitalizing the current aging housing stock for the needs of the community” until supportive housing availability increases across the region. This pause excludes fixing current single-room occupancy and temporary modular housing units in the city.
