Virtual Platform Maintained Kidney Transplant Evaluations During COVID-19 Office Closures
Use of a virtual pre-transplant evaluation platform during the early phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic allowed physicians with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) division of transplant surgery to continue to evaluate consumer eligibility for kidney transplant and waitlist placement. By using the virtual platform from April through September 2020 to evaluate consumers at home, the surgical teams were able to conduct more transplant evaluations compared to the same period in 2019. The number of waitlist placements remained at the same level as before the pandemic began.
