Washington Medicaid To Cover ‘Store & Forward’ Telemedicine Dermatology Services
On July 1, 2017, the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) will begin reimbursing for “store and forward” asynchronous telemedicine services; initially, reimbursement for asynchronous telemedicine services will be limited to dermatology. This type of telemedicine services consists of medical information files transmitted to a distant site medical professional for review at a later time; acceptable file types include recorded video files, images and non-video files. Asynchronous telemedicine does not include the use of audio-only telephone, facsimile, or email. HCA seeks to assess how asynchronous telemedicine services are used before expanding it for multiple specialties.
