Washington Medicaid Receives Federal Approval To Create Community Health Worker Benefit For Preventive Services
The Washington Health Care Authority (HCA) is adding community health worker (CHW) services as a Medicaid state plan benefit. On December 11, 2024, HCA announced that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) had approved its state plan amendment (SPA) on November 27, 2024, allowing CHWs to provide preventive services to Apple Health (the state’s Medicaid program) enrollees. HCA is expected to have the benefit live by the deadline of June 30, 2025, which aligns with the ending of the CHW Grant Program which has been operating since January 2023.
