WellCare Launching Nationwide Medicaid Pharmacy Management Program In 2018 To Cut Opioid Dispensing
On October 25, 2017, WellCare Health Plans, Inc. announced plans to expand a pharmacy management program designed to reduce opioid prescribing across its Medicaid markets. WellCare tested the program in a pilot that launched in December 2016 in Kentucky — the pilot reduced opioid dispensing by 50%. The nationwide expansion will take place in 2018. WellCare plans to integrate the best practices of the pilot when it expands the program in both Kentucky, and its 11 other Medicaid markets. Results of these programs will be assessed every six months to consider progress and improvements.
