Youth Sue Florida Department Of Juvenile Justice Over Solitary Confinement
On September 5, 2019, youth incarcerated by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) sued the state over its use of solitary confinement in secure detention centers for minor misbehavior. While in solitary confinement, the youth alleged that DJJ failed to provide them access to school services, recreation, or appropriate mental health services. The plaintiffs said that the use of solitary confinement violates the U.S. Constitution and discriminates against youth with disabilities, which violates the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act.
