Youth With Chronic Pain May Have More Anxiety & Depression

Among young people aged 24 years and younger with chronic pain, about 34.6% have anxiety and 12.2% have depression. These figures are about three times the prevalence among the general population of youth.

Youth with chronic pain had greater symptoms of both anxiety and depression compared with controls. A total of 23.9% of young people with chronic pain had anxiety symptoms that exceeded clinical cutoff scores for anxiety. The 23.5% with chronic pain had depression symptoms that exceeded clinical cutoff scores for depression.
