October 1, 2010 Researchers from the Kaiser Family Foundation reviewed Medicare spending and use of medical services by beneficiaries in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. They found that the six percent of Medicare beneficiaries living in long-term care facilities accounted for 17% of Medicare spending in 2006. They proposed that reducing the rate of preventable hospitalizations among these beneficiaries could yield savings to Medicare, for example reducing hospitalizations by 25% could save an estimated $2.1 billion in 2010.
