Starting October 1, 2022, new International Classification of Disease, 10th Revision clinical modification (ICD-10 CM) codes go into effect to capture additional information on dementia conditions, including symptoms of dementia-related agitation. While previous codes identified types of dementia and whether behavioral disturbances were present, the new codes add specificity on the stage of dementia severity and more fully identify types of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. They are to be used for discharges occurring from October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2023, and for health care visits occurring from October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2023.
