Explore Strategies For Developing Sustainable Program Models From OPEN MINDS Experts — Upcoming Management Monday Coffee Break Case Studies
OPEN MINDS releases new line-up for July Management Monday series featuring operational management strategies to guide development of sustainable programs, resources, and finances in non-profit health and human service organizations
GETTYSBURG, Pa. (July 5, 2017) — From a management perspective, non-profit leaders are constantly findings ways to maximize resources in the short-term and become sustainable in the long-term. Financial limitations and the push towards creating increased value while reducing costs, are driving many non-profits of all types to consider new strategies to utilize their resources and plan creatively to stretch to max capacity.
To help non-profit leadership navigate planning for sustainability in their organization, OPEN MINDS will feature a strategic operations-focused set of presentations from two former non-profit leaders, Tressell Carter, former Executive Director of Colonial Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and Robert Cartia, former Chief Executive Officer of Spectrum Healthcare Group.
Both case studies will discuss how to develop sustainable models to address management of volunteer resources and to ensure financial sustainability of an integrated care program. Each presentation will highlight the challenges seen by organizations, how to develop solutions for these challenges, and a case example of an organization who has shown success. A detailed description for each presentation is listed below:
- July 3, 2017: Developing A Sustainable Non-Board Volunteer Model with Tressell Carter, MPA
The heartbeat of an organization is its people. More so, the pulse of a non-profit is its volunteers. Most non-profits have term limits for their board of directors as defined in their bylaws to prevent conflict of interest and to ensure a continuity of leadership. However, many do not have term-limits for non-board volunteers. Smart non-profits are engaging volunteers strategically, with the intention of building capacity in a cost-effective manner. This presentation will showcase the value of developing a sustainable non-board volunteer model that includes term limits to ensure the fidelity of the relationship between the organization and its volunteers. - July 31, 2017: Integrated Primary Care Services: Ensuring Financial Sustainability with Robert Cartia, MBA, MA, LISAC, SSBB
An increasing number of traditional community behavioral health organizations are incorporating primary medical care services as a new business line as part of their integrated care strategy. The most difficult business challenge for these organizations is financial sustainability of the primary care component. Financial sustainability is difficult to achieve due to many issues such as; lack of experience in primary medical care service delivery, provider staffing and reimbursement, the cost of care for highly complex patients and more. This presentation will focus on how a behavioral health organization can address the challenge of financial sustainability by applying a lean approach and other quality improvement methods.
