OPEN MINDS Releases Market Intelligence Reports On State Health Home Regulations & Rates & On Medical Home Accreditation Standards

Accreditation Options & Per-State Management Approaches Examined In New Publications

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (October 11, 2015) — The OPEN MINDS Market Intelligence team released two new Market Intelligence Reports in August. The reports are published weekly by OPEN MINDS’ team of experts, providing readers with a data-rich resource that dives deep into critical topics affecting organizations in the health and human services field.

The reports take a detailed look at accreditation options for medical homes and health homes, and also discuss how specific states are managing health homes.

“The Market Intelligence Reports are one of the most valuable publications in the way they address critical and relevant topics by breaking them down to provide a complete understanding to busy executives,” said Athena Mandros, Market Intelligence Analyst at OPEN MINDS. “As a payer or provider, there are a lot of changes and new information to stay on top of to best manage an organization. Lately, we have really seen an influx of organizations looking for more information regarding the accreditation process, and for good reason. In today’s market, accreditation can essentially be viewed as the “good housekeeping” seal of approval for payers. Both public and private payers are utilizing accreditation to be more selective when choosing provider organizations, and they are using accreditation as a selection tool. Essentially accreditation is a way for providers to signal to consumers that they are dedicated to quality care and meet and/or exceed standards, which in a way is a reputation management system for organizations,” said Mandros. “I believe we will see more organizations considering accreditation due to the increased importance of organizational transparency.”

“Additionally, we are seeing the rise of Medicaid health homes. For many the idea of an initiative lessening health care cost growth by enabling individuals to better manage their conditions seems ideal, but there are many unanswered questions for organizations looking to incorporate such an approach, which is why the Market Intelligence Reports are so essential to really receive a well-rounded view of the model,” added Mandros.

The individual reports are outlined below.

The first report, What Accreditation Options Are Available For Medical Homes & Health Homes?, takes a look at the accreditation process that is becoming increasingly important for both medical homes and health homes. Accreditation is important because it allows organizations to demonstrate that they are meeting and exceeding industry quality standards and are committed to high-level quality care. As the number of states participating in these accreditation initiatives is on the rise OPEN MINDS takes a detailed look at the process and answers a number of questions regarding the processes, costs, standards, and how medical homes and/or health homes are recognized by organizations.

The table of contents for the report, and listing of answered questions are as follows:

  1. What Accreditation Options Are Available For Medical Homes & Health Homes?
  2. What State Medicaid Programs Require Medical Home & Health Home Accreditation?
  3. What Is The Medical Home Accreditation Process Of The Accreditation Association For Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC)?
  4. What Is The PCMH Accreditation Process Of The National Committee For Quality Assurance (NCQA)?
  5. What Is The PCMH & Health Home Accreditation Process of The Joint Commission (JC)?
  6. What Is The Behavioral Health Home Accreditation Process of CARF International?
  7. What Is The PCMH Accreditation Process Of URAC?

The second report, How Are States Managing Medicaid Health Homes?, provides an in-depth view of health homes and how different states are managing this population-based service delivery model. The health home model became a new Medicaid state plan option under the 2010 healthcare reform legislation, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). The initiative is aimed at controlling health care costs growth by enabling individuals with chronic care illnesses to better manage their conditions, reducing hospitalizations, and lessening costly emergency department visits. The health home model builds on the medical home model’s focus on acute care by including linkages to other community support and social supports, enhancing integration and coordination of medical and behavioral health care in order to meet the needs of individuals with multiple chronic illnesses.

The OPEN MINDS report answers many questions related to health homes, as outlined below in the report’s table of contents:

1. What Is A Health Home?
2. What Populations Are Served By Medicaid Health Homes?
3. How Do States Contract With Health Homes & What Are the Current Payment Rates?
4. A State-By-State Guide To Current Medicaid Health Homes – Populations Served, Providers, & Payment Rates
