The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) reported that child fatalities due to maltreatment in the 2017 fiscal year (FY) decreased by 22% compared to 2016. In FY 2017, DFPS reported 172 child fatalities due to maltreatment; these fatalities represented 21.3% of the 807 total child fatality investigations during FY 2017.

DFPS reported the statistics in "2017 Child Fatality Annual Report." Researchers studied administrative data and individual case reviews for confirmed child abuse and neglect related fatalities during FY 2017.
