Nevada Passes Justice Reinvestment Bill To Address Behavioral Health Needs & Reduce Recidivism
A Nevada justice reinvestment bill, enacted on June 7, 2019 as Nevada Assembly Bill 236, includes provisions to address behavioral health needs and reduce recidivism. The legislation targets interventions and services to people with behavioral health needs; better aligns sentence lengths with the severity of lower-level, nonviolent offenses; and incorporates best practices into community supervision. It is estimated that the legislation will avert an estimated 63% of projected growth in the prison population over the next decade, saving taxpayers approximately $543 million.
