On March 4, 2020, the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) announced that its three-year prison recidivism rate dropped to 26.7% for prisoners released in 2016, down 1.4 percentage points from the 2018 three-year rate of 28.1% for those released in 2014. The state’s recidivism rates have been falling since 1998 when the rate was 45.7%. The 26.7% rate for the cohort released in 2016 is the lowest since the state began tracking three-year rates.

The MDOC attributed the drop in recidivism to its “Offender Success” model that provides prisoners with education . . .
