People with a history of heart failure who contract coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had a longer hospital stays, nearly three times the risk of intubation and mechanical ventilation, and double the risk of death compared to people with COVID-19 with no history of heart failure. The higher risk was evident regardless of the severity of heart failure.

The average length of stay was eight days for those with heart failure compared to six days for those without heart failure. About 22.8% of those with heart failure needed mechanical ventilation, compared to 11.9% of those without heart . . .
