Share Of Medicare Advantage Institutional Special Needs Plans Led By Long-Term Care Provider Organizations Rises From 9% In 2015 To 37% In 2021
About 37% of Medicare Advantage Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs) in 2021 are operated by long-term care (LTC) provider organizations, up from 9% of all I-SNPs in 2015. I-SNPs are specialized Medicare Advantage plans that only enroll Medicare beneficiaries who are residents of institutional LTC settings, such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities. In 2015 there were 57 I-SNPs, and 5 were led by an LTC provider organization. For 2021, there are 174 I-SNPs, and 64 are led by LTC provider organizations. The remaining I-SNPs are operated by insurance companies.
