The number of children who died due to maltreatment rose 4% in 2019, from 1,735 deaths in 2018 to 1,804 deaths in 2019. During 2018, there were 677,000 child victims of neglect, physical abuse, or sexual abuse. The fatalities due to maltreatment represented 0.25% of the total victims in 2018. During 2019, the incidence dropped by about 3% to 656,000 cases of child maltreatment. The fatalities due to maltreatment represented 0.28% of total victims in 2019.
