38 Million People Age 12 & Older Had Unmet Need For Addiction Treatment In 2020
About 13.9% of the non-institutionalized civilian population in the United States age 12 and older had addiction disorder in 2020, but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility, representing 38.4 million people with unmet need. About 2.7 million who needed addiction treatment in 2020 received it at a specialty facility, representing about 1% of the population over age 12. Need for addiction treatment was defined as having a current year addiction disorder or having received specialty addiction treatment the previous year.
