Wellspring Lutheran Services has announced that it will open Michigan’s first addiction recovery high school in Farmington Hills in January 2021. “Wellspring Academy” will support students who have issues with drugs and alcohol maintain their sobriety as they complete high school. The 80-acre, charter-school campus will have the capacity to serve up to 120 high school students (grades 9 to 12) from southeast Michigan and surrounding areas.
Recovery high schools help students by offering an environment tailored to help those looking for addiction recovery while pursuing their education. Features of Wellspring’s recovery environment include smaller classrooms with a recovery-oriented culture, customizing workloads to focus on academic challenges that are common in those dealing with addiction, offering recovery-enabling enrichment activities (recovery meetings, 12-step meetings, and peer supports), and encouraging an open attitude about relapse when it happens. To offer these supports, Wellspring will employ administrative staff, teaching staff, on-staff addiction treatment counselors, and appropriate mental health professionals. Besides classrooms, Wellspring Academy will also feature amenities such as a library, computer lab, weight room, dining hall, auditorium, art studio, athletic fields, and a running track.
Due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Wellspring Academy will initially open as a virtual campus. Wrap-around recovery support services and a drop-in center will be available for in-person services at the Farmington Hills campus. In-person classes will officially begin in September 2020.
