Is An EHR Ever “Free”?

Just put "Free EHR" or "Free EMR" into Google search – and you get a long list. The obvious question. If you can get a system "for free", why pay for one?

Well, like most things, "free" isn't exactly the case. Every organization needs resources to operate – and software providers (with some rare exceptions) are not philanthropic organizations. So, if you're evaluating "free" software, it's a good idea to understand how these organizations make money. Here's our short list:
