On August 1, 2025, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed House Bill 1806, the Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act (see Gov. Pritzker Signs Legislation Prohibiting AI Therapy in Illinois and Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act). The legislation prohibits the use of AI for conducting behavioral health therapy—and for creating treatment plans and diagnosing consumer conditions. The bill does not affect the use of AI for administrative purposes like note-taking, presentation of research on treatment options, or gathering consumer assessment data. The law was passed unanimously by the Illinois legislature.
