The Change In Peers
The role of peers in addiction treatment has new (and positive) attention. One recent study, Emergency Department Peer Support Program and Patient Outcomes After Opioid Overdose, found that peer support programs in emergency rooms resulted in more initiative of medication for opioid use disorder.;Another found that for consumers presenting in emergency rooms for overdoses and equal post-release outcomes whether served by peers or social workers (see Effect Of A Peer-Led Emergency Department Behavioral Intervention On Non-Fatal Opioid Overdose). This new research adds to the body of research showing the effectiveness of peers.
