Still A Ways To Go
Treatment of serious mental illnesses has improved over the course of my career—but there is still a long way to go. For consumers with schizophrenia, only 14.3% received care that could be considered consistent with evidence-based treatment recommendations (see Recent Care Of Common Mental Disorders In The United States ). For consumers participating in treatment, 25% to 60% are adherent with the recommended treatment plan (see Treatment Nonadherence In Schizophrenia: The Patient’s Perspective) and 80% to 90% of consumers treated for schizophrenia experience a relapse (see The Nature Of Relapse In Schizophrenia).
