July 16, 2007 Indiana Division of Mental Health Launches CANS — New Children’s Assessment System On July 1, 2007, the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA) launched the Children and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment system for use by all Indiana behavioral health providers who contract with DMHA. The Hoosier Assurance Plan Instrument for Children (HAPI-C) the functional assessment tool previously used by these agencies was retired on June 30, 2007.
