U.S. Long-Term Care Work Force At 4.6 Million Workers
In 2020, the long-term care workforce of 4.6 million workers included 2.4 million home care workers who were employed with a provider organization, 675,000 residential care aides, and 527,000 nursing assistants in nursing homes. Another 1 million direct care workers work in other settings.
The home care workforce includes personal care aides, home health aides, and some nursing assistants. They assist more than 8.6 million older adults and people with disabilities. About half of the 2.4 million home care workforce (about 1.2 million) are employed through Medicaid-funded consumer-directed programs.
