Approximately 4,200 children in New York lost a parent or guardian to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) between March 2020 and July 2020. This equates to a rate of about 1 in every 1,000 children statewide. Approximately 23% of the children who lost caregivers during the pandemic may have lost a sole parent or guardian, putting them at risk of entering foster care or the care of a relative. Approximately 50% of these children are at risk of falling into poverty. COVID-19 death data includes probable and confirmed COVID-19 deaths.
