CMS To End Medicare Next Generation ACO Model After 2021
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will end the Next Generation accountable care organization (ACO) Model on December 31, 2021. According to a May 21, 2021, email sent to Next Generation ACO participants, CMS does not expect to “extend or expand” the model since the model has generated a “net-spending increase of $117.5 million and no net savings for CMS.” Current Next Generation ACOs can apply to participate in the standard track of the CMS Global and Professional Direct Contracting (GPDC) Model, if they wish to continue participating in an accountable care model.
