Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases treated in an outpatient setting cost an average of between $500 and $1,000 per member, according to data released by Blue Cross Blue Shield. When members were hospitalized with COVID-19, however, costs were 45 times higher than cases treated on an outpatient basis. When members were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), the average treatment cost was 2.5 times higher than those hospitalized without an ICU stay.

Those members with a high-risk condition experienced ICU stays for COVID-19 at a rate of about 30 per 100,000 members . . .
