Emergency department visits for disaster-associated mental health and drug overdose were higher during the height of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the initial 41 weeks of 2020, than during the same period in 2019. In 2019, there was a weekly average of 39,336 mental health emergency department visits. During 2020, the weekly average rose by 4.4% to 41,075 emergency department visits for mental health conditions. Drug overdose visits rose by 16%. Opioid overdose visits rose by nearly 29%.
