From 2000 Through 2018, Rural Suicide Rates Were Higher Than Urban Suicide Rates

From 2000 through 2018, rural suicide rates were higher than urban suicide rates. In rural areas, suicide rates rose by 48%, from 13.1 per 100,000 in 2000 to 19.4 per 100,000 in 2018. The rate rose 1% annually from 2000 to 2007, and rose by 3% annually from 2007 to 2018. In urban areas, suicide rates rose by 34%, from 10.0 per 100,000 in 2000 to 13.4 per 100,000 in 2018. The rate rose by 1% annually from 2000 to 2006; and by 2% annually from 2006 through 2018.
