GLP-1 Use Associated With Lower Mortality Among Adults With Serious Mental Illness

Adults with serious mental illness (SMI) who started glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) had lower mortality than similar adults with SMI who started sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, according to a recent study. After one year, mortality risk was 48% lower among those taking GLP-1 medications.

One-year mortality was 1.46% among adults with SMI who started GLP-1 medications, compared with 2.84% among those who started SGLT2 inhibitors. The difference continued over four years, when 4.9% of those taking GLP-1 medications had died, compared with 6.5% of those . . .
