Higher Risk Of Mortality Found For Individuals Diagnosed With Autism Or ADHD
People with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have higher mortality risks than those in the general population. Death in childhood or midlife from natural causes (such as heart disease, cancer, or respiratory disease) or unnatural causes (such as accidents or suicide) is twice as likely for people with ADHD or ASD, compared to the general population. ADHD and ASD were associated with higher mortality due to unnatural causes such as injury, poisoning, or suicide. Only people with ASD experienced reduced life expectancy due to natural causes of death.
