Hospital-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Rates In 2017 Highest In Low Income & Rural Areas
During 2017, rates for traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) that resulted in a hospital stay or emergency department visit were highest in low income and rural areas. For those residing in the lowest-income communities, TBI-related inpatient hospital stays were 29% higher (110 per 100,000 population) than those from the highest-income communities (85 per 100,000 population). The rate of TBI-related emergency department visits for those living in rural, metro-adjacent areas was 41% higher (327 per 100,000 population) than for those residing in metro areas (232 per 100,000 population).
