On August 16, 2021, a new Illinois law, Senate Bill (SB) 677, went into effect to require health care professionals to be trained on dementia diagnosis by January 1, 2023. Illinois the first state in the nation to require Alzheimer's diagnosis training for health care professionals as a condition of obtaining and maintaining licensure.

The law applies to all professionals who provide health care services to and have direct care interactions with adults age 26 and older. Among the types of professionals mentioned in the legislation are nursing home administrators, social workers, nurses, physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory . . .
