On September 1, 2021, the Illumination Foundation opened Plumeria House, a specialty homeless shelter for Orange County, California families who have a child with disabilities or chronic illness. Plumeria House can provide emergency housing for up to six families, for up to 90 days (or longer in extenuating circumstances). The shelter is wheelchair accessible and designed to accommodate and address the complex needs of families. Data collected by the Orange County Family Coordinated Entry System (CES) indicates that 17.8% of new households enrolled in 2020 (representing 136 households) have at least one child with a disabling condition.
