Hospitalization Due To Type 2 Diabetes Among Children Doubled During COVID-19
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency, hospitalization due to type 2 diabetes among children rose from 0.27% in 2019 to 0.62% in 2020. Children admitted to the hospital in 2020 had more severe diabetes with higher blood glucose, higher HbA1C (a marker of blood sugar control over three months), and higher indicators of dehydration (serum osmolality level) compared to children admitted in 2019. The mean admission HbA1c was 12.4% in 2019, and 13.1% in 2020. The mean admission glucose level was 441 mg/dL in 2019 vs. 669 mg/dL in 2020 . . .
